Nijmegen stops the mantelzorgcompliment — this is what remains

For years, family carers in Nijmegen received a yearly mantelzorgcompliment (a payment as a token of appreciation). In the Stadsbegroting 2025-2028 (the city budget) the council decided to stop it: "In 2026 we will stop the Mantelzorgcompliment in its current form." That saves the municipality € 500,000 a year. The money that remains goes to joint support for family carers in vulnerable situations.

So what stays? Through Mantelzorg Nijmegen (part of Sterker sociaal werk) you can go, free of charge, for conversations, advice, courses and activities. If caring becomes too much for a while, there is the zorgpauze (a break from caring): a volunteer or a professional takes over the care for a time — at home, through dagbesteding (day activities) or with a short stay elsewhere. Sometimes this is free, sometimes an indicatie (a care needs assessment) or funding is needed. The Respijtzorg Wijzer Nijmegen gives an overview of all the possibilities.

Do you live in a paid parking area? Then, as a family carer, you can still apply to the municipality for a cheaper parking permit. A short stay elsewhere for the person you care for is arranged through the neighbourhood team (buurtteam) or the adviser for older people.
